Outokumpu ranked 25th among the most sustainable companies in Europe on Corporate Knights’ Top 50 list
Outokumpu, the global leader in sustainable stainless steel, has been placed 25th on the Corporate Knights’ list of Europe’s 50 most sustainable companies – reaching the highest place in the steel industry. The ranking recognizes European companies that are leading in sustainability performance and driving positive change across industries. This year, Corporate Knights published their first-ever ranking of the 50 most sustainable companies in Europe, and Outokumpu was included on the list for the first time.
The annual ranking by Corporate Knights evaluates companies based on a broad range of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) indicators, including resource management, sustainable revenue, and supplier performance. Being listed among Europe’s top 50 companies underscores Outokumpu’s progress in reducing emissions, increasing circularity, and driving sustainable practices across its value chain.
“We are proud to be recognized among the most sustainable companies in Europe, reflecting our strong commitment to sustainability and reaffirming our position as an industry leader. It also highlights our role as an enabler of the green transition – providing low-emission stainless steel that supports decarbonization across industries. With up to 75% lower carbon footprint, we support our customer industries to reduce their supply chain emissions and reach their climate targets”, says Heidi Peltonen, Vice President, Sustainability at Outokumpu.
In 2024, Outokumpu was ahead of its climate target and reduced its emission intensity by 32% compared to the base level of 2016. Outokumpu also reached its circularity target with a record-high level of recycled material content of 95%. In 2024, Outokumpu supported its customers to avoid 10 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in total, compared to global average of stainless steel.
Besides the ambitious climate work, Outokumpu received fair pay certification in 2024 – a first in the industry – and is committed to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights across its value chain.
Outokumpu was also recently ranked among the world’s most sustainable companies on Corporate Knights’ Clean200 list, further confirming its global leadership in sustainable business practices.
