Environmental product declaration verify the sustainability of Outokumpu stainless

Sustainability is key to Outokumpu operations. Developing our processes daily and documenting our ways of working takes us closer to our target – a sustainable society. As industry forerunner, Outokumpu is the only stainless steel producer to provide Environmental product declarations (EPD) for the whole product portfolio. An EPD is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent and comparable information about the environmental impact of a product during its life cycle.

EPD are built on life cycle data and help calculating sustainability performance over a product’s life cycle

The support EPDs provide for computing sustainability performance of an end-user application made of stainless steel is crucial: customers can use the EPD as a reliable source when making life cycle calculations for such as the carbon foot print of their end-products or to find sustainable material for a project.

“This is particularly the case in building and construction, when developers are required to report on environmental effects of the construction material used and of the building itself during its life cycle”, says Camilla Kaplin, responsible for product stewardship, safety and environment at Outokumpu. The building product Environmental product declarations are normally modular. In order to build with EPD verified reinforced concrete, all the components, cement, aggregate and rebar need to be EPD verified.

The EPD information is also useful for e.g. product design, marketing, and procurement.

Only stainless steel producer with full range of EPDs

There are four EPD documents available: for cold rolled stainless steel, hot rolled stainless steel, long products and for rebar. These cover the Outokumpu stainless steel portfolio.Outokumpu Environmental product declarations are found here.

Outokumpu EPDs are published and verified by an external Programme Operator, the Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V. (IBU), and the data has been collected by an external consult, to ensure the compliance of the EPD content.
