Outokumpu acknowledged for the third time as a Climate Leader in Europe by Financial Times
Outokumpu has been recognized for the third time as one of Europe’s Climate Leaders by the Financial Times and Statista, highlighting the company’s continued progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing sustainable business practices.
The 2026 edition of the ranking includes 600 companies across Europe that have demonstrated meaningful climate action and transparency in their emissions reporting. Outokumpu secured the 13th position out of 43 companies in the chemicals and materials sector and ranked 255th among 600 companies across all sectors.
The Europe’s Climate Leaders ranking identifies companies that have achieved significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions intensity while maintaining strong financial performance. The methodology assesses companies based on their ability to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, decrease emissions intensity between 2019 and 2024, and disclose Scope 3 emissions. In addition, companies are evaluated on climate-related commitments such as CDP scores and Science Based Targets.
“Being recognized for the third time as one of Europe’s Climate Leaders reflects our whole organizations’ strong commitment to reduce emissions and support the clean transition. We have systematically decarbonized across our value chain, achieving a 33% reduction since the 2016 baseline towards our science-based climate target,” says Heidi Peltonen, VP Sustainability at Outokumpu. “Beyond that, we support our customers annually to reduce their emissions by over 12 million tonnes – this is the equivalent of 63 million train trips around the world. Outokumpu provides already today a stainless steel with up to 75% lower carbon footprint than the global average.”1
To be included in the ranking by Financial Times companies must meet strict eligibility criteria, including transparent emissions reporting and measurable progress in emission reductions.
The ranking is compiled annually by the Financial Times in collaboration with Statista, based on a comprehensive process that includes data collection, validation, and scoring. Companies are assessed using publicly available data as well as information submitted directly, ensuring a comparable evaluation across industries.
Outokumpu’s continued inclusion in the list highlights the company’s long-term commitment to climate action and its role in advancing sustainable solutions within the stainless steel industry.
