Securing a seismic shift in sustainability

Edil CAM’s innovative anti-seismic devices make an important contribution to the sustainability of historic buildings by preventing them from collapsing even under severe seismic shocks. Now the Italian company is taking its own commitment to sustainability to new heights by switching to Outokumpu Circle Green®, our towards zero stainless steel.

The patented CAM® active system “stitches” the building’s masonry together, using strips of stainless steel to create a three-dimensional grid. This consolidates the structure, giving it greater compressional strength for increased load-bearing capacity with no increase in mass. Tests have shown the system to offer an impressive improvement in the seismic resistance of historic and listed masonry buildings. In addition, it can also help to consolidate framed or prefabricated reinforced concrete structures such as bridges.

“Our philosophy is built around innovation, especially in offering increasingly sustainable products on an environmental, economic and social level,” says Alessandro Vari, General Director of Edil CAM. “Outokumpu’s stainless steel is a vital element in our systems for its performance, long-life and sustainability. So, when we heard that Circle Green offered an even lower carbon footprint we knew we had to adopt it.”

The relationship between Outokumpu and Edil CAM started back in 2010 when the company wanted to upgrade from the carbon steel it was using to stainless steel. Since then, an effective partnership has developed with Edil CAM, working mainly through Outokumpu CSC Castelleone, requesting and promoting the development of innovative materials and Outokumpu responding with technical and commercial support.

Circle Green stainless steels have identical mechanical performance and corrosion resistance with the existing grades used by Edil CAM , including Core 304L and Forta duplex. The difference is the tight control exerted across the entire production chain to minimize emissions at every stage, through sourcing, manufacture, processing and logistics. This means that Circle Green has a carbon footprint up to 93 percent lower than the industry average.

Edil CAM has just received it first delivery of a coil of Circle Green Core 304L through Refas, the Italian subcontractor. But according to Alessandro Vari, that is only the beginning:

“We have made it our objective to reduce Edil CAM’s CO2 emissions as quickly as possible. That is why Circle Green is so attractive for us. Because it is identical in composition and performance with the Outokumpu grades we use already so there is no need for requalification. That enables a seamless switch up to even greater sustainability for our products. And the plan is that within the coming year, we will shift the majority of Edil CAM’s production to Circle Green.”
