Sourcing stainless steel in a post-globalization world

Discussion Paper

Across Europe, a new reality is being forged. Global trade of metals, once defined by cost-efficiency and scale, is being reshaped by geopolitics and heightened demand for sustainability. For procurement leaders feeling pressure from all sides, this is now a strategic imperative.

A newly released discussion paper, Sourcing Steel in a Post-Globalization World — developed in collaboration with independent research consultancy Kairos Future — examines how industries faced with the modern challenges of sourcing steel are responding.

In its investigation, the report highlights:

  • Europe’s three traditional external dependencies: cheap Russian energy, U.S. security guarantees, and Chinese market demand — a model that no longer works.
  • The three strategic drivers defining tomorrow’s industrial competitiveness: resilience, sustainability, and regional self-sufficiency.

This is where stainless steel, often overlooked but essential to infrastructure, healthcare, mobility, and defense, takes center stage in the shift towards circularity and resilience in tomorrow’s supply chains.

Among the success stories identified in the research is Outokumpu’s Circle Green®, the world’s first near-zero stainless steel, manufactured in Europe and made with more than 90% recycled content and with up to 93% lower carbon footprint than the global industry average. With carbon accounting becoming mandatory (through mechanisms like the EU’s CBAM and Digital Product Passport), these credentials are directly tied to competitiveness and future compliance.

The discussion paper also highlights how leading producers are redefining the role of procurement. It’s no longer just about price. Sourcing decisions now influence operational risk, brand value, and market access. Companies that adopt high-transparency and low-emission materials today are positioning themselves to meet the expectations of tomorrow with confidence. The right choice for the planet is also the smart choice for business.
