Business based on circular economy

Our mills are in fact significant recycling facilities. Every year, our mills process more than 2 million tonnes of scrap, or recycled steel, and turn it into more than 2 million tonnes of sustainable, long-lasting material. It does not need maintenance, and at the end of its long lifecycle, it is fully recyclable. And it is not only what we do, but how we do it: Outokumpu aims to minimize the environmental impacts of its production.

Our customers use our stainless steel to build bridges and buildings, produce cars, trains and trucks, and manufacture household appliances and utensils. Outokumpu is known in the market for our unmatched expertise in stainless steel as well as the quality of our products. Our experts produce stainless steel in our mills in Finland, Germany, Mexico, Sweden and the US; they research and develop stainless steel and its production further at our research centers and mills; and they help and advise our customers in choosing, using, and processing stainless steel.

In our next strategy 2026–2030, we are evolving from a trusted stainless steel producer into a pioneering force in materials and technologies solutions.

Pioneering materials and technologies that power tomorrow

Our next strategy, EVOLVE, for 2026–2030, builds upon maximizing value in sustainable stainless steel, growing profitably in advanced materials and alloys as well as innovative materials and technologies. Our vision is to pioneer materials and technologies that power tomorrow. We drive growth by expanding our portfolio into high-margin, high-value grades and differentiate through customer collaboration. We are also exploring innovative materials and metals and aim to produce low CO2 metals, first focusing on chromium metals.

Our strategy

Our business

Our business is based on circular economy, as our most important raw material is recycled steel or scrap. Out of our three business areas, Europe and the Americas are responsible for manufacturing and selling stainless steel in their market areas, and Ferrochrome run our chrome mine and ferrochrome works – ferrochrome an essential raw material, as chrome is what makes steel stainless.

Sustainability

Europe

Sustainable stainless steel is the foundation of our business. We are the market leader in Europe and look to strengthen our position.

In Europe, we serve customers in two business lines according to the customer needs. Stainless Europe focuses on customers of large quantities of our cost competitive sustainable stainless steel, while Advanced Materials serves project business and the manufacturers of demanding applications by advanced materials and alloys.

Our history

Since our founding days in the 1910s, we have been pioneers in the field of metals and materials. Outokumpu's history is as long as that of stainless steel, and we still operate on locations that were instrumental in inventing it. Whenever a mineral ore was found in Finland, Outokumpu was asked to investigate if it would be viable for production. If there was no established method of producing it, we developed one. This journey has laid the foundation of our company.
