Scrubbers

Stainless steel for marine scrubbers

To meet IMO (International Maritime Organization) regulations for reducing harmful sulfur oxide emissions, merchant vessels are required to have marine scrubber units installed in order to burn heavy fuel oil. High-performance materials are vital to withstanding the extremely corrosive conditions in a scrubber.

Corrosion resistance, optimized lifetime and sustainability

The operating conditions inside a marine scrubber are extremely aggressive due to a combination of acids, elevated temperatures and the high chloride content in the wash water. To tackle these hostile conditions and to guarantee a long service life for the scrubber, it’s essential to choose the right high-performance stainless steels. Stainless steels also contribute to sustainability as the system lasts longer, with no need for regular replacement of components. Choosing the correct stainless steel grades helps you save both energy and resources.

Ultra range

Our key Ultra range grades for scrubbers:
• Ultra 254 SMO
• Ultra 654 SMO

The Ultra range includes highly-alloyed austenitic grades for extremely corrosive environments. The strength and elongation properties of the Ultra range are similar or better than conventional austenitic grades. Despite the greater strength of these steels, they form and weld nicely.

Forta range

Our key Forta range grades for scrubbers:
• Forta SDX 2507
• Forta DX 2205

Duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel combines many of the best properties of austenitic and ferritic stainless steels: high strength, good corrosion resistance and enhanced resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. The Forta range includes the strongest stainless steels in our portfolio.
