Outokumpu’s Calvert mill has been named an Innovation Award recipient in Norfolk Southern’s fourth annual Thoroughbred Sustainability Partner Awards. The recognition highlights Calvert’s long-term commitment to operational efficiency and lower-emission logistics, centered on reducing CO emissions across the value chain.

This year’s submission showcased coordinated efforts across Outokumpu’s supply chain, environmental, operations, and logistics teams to provide customers with a more sustainable delivery option. Where feasible, finished products were shipped by rail instead of truck. This shift reduced logistics emissions by more than 10,800 tons of CO in 2024, strengthening both climate performance and supply-chain resilience.

“We’re proud to be recognized by Norfolk Southern as an Innovation Award recipient. Outokumpu’s sustainability leadership is central to our strategy, and expanding rail transport supports both our sustainability goals and a more resilient supply chain – ultimately strengthening the reliability we offer our customers. This recognition reflects the strength of our collaboration with Norfolk Southern and reinforces our ambition to drive responsible solutions across the value chain,” says Paulus Pörhölä, Senior Vice President, Supply Chain Management, business area Americas.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Outokumpu’s Calvert mill has received a Thoroughbred Sustainability Partner Award, having been recognized every year since the program’s launch in 2022.

Calvert’s sustainability work was further acknowledged this year with its third consecutive Environmental Stewardship Award from Partners for Environmental Progress, recognizing continuous efforts to minimize environmental impacts at the site.
