Outokumpu acknowledged as a Climate Leader by Financial Times

Outokumpu has been included in the Financial Times’ list of Europe’s Climate Leaders in 2023. Financial Times and research company Statista’s list recognizes European companies that are leading the way in emissions reduction as well as transparency and commitment to global climate-related initiatives. Outokumpu made the list as the only stainless steel producer.

As a basis for the listing, Statista has reviewed public data of approximately 2,000 European companies. The final list comprises of companies that have achieved the greatest reduction in their core emissions intensity, that is their Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions in relation to revenue. For the first time, the methodology also considers companies who have demonstrated transparency in reporting scope 3 emissions and committed to climate-related initiatives such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

“Being included in this listing as the only stainless steel company shows that we are truly leading the industry with our ambitious climate targets. It is also an acknowledgement for our long-term work in reporting and reducing our indirect scope 3 emissions. We are constantly working with our suppliers and other partners to further reduce our raw material emissions. Going forward, we will keep innovating to further strengthen the closed-loop economy of steel to benefit the whole ecosystem”, says Juha Erkkilä, VP – Sustainability at Outokumpu.

Outokumpu has committed to ambitious science-based climate targets aligned with the 1.5 degrees ambition. Outokumpu’s climate targets have been approved by the Science Based targets initiative (SBTi) as the only stainless steel producer. In March 2023, Outokumpu was also recognized for its efforts to drive down emissions in the supply chain with a position on CDP’s 2022 Supplier Engagement Leaderboard.
