What are the effects of CBAM on stainless steel?

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) introduces a carbon price on selected imported goods to ensure equal treatment between EU and nonEU producers. For stainless steel, CBAM will impact costs and sourcing decisions as importers must declare and verify the emissions of their products, with certificate payments starting in 2027.

The webinar is presented by Ernesto Hartikainen, Head of ESG Policy & Reporting, and Jörg Müller, Head of Sales, Stainless Europe.

The topics that will be covered in this webinar are:

  • How CBAM works
  • The cost impact on imported stainless steel and
  • How Outokumpu’s low-emission stainless steel strengthens competitiveness under the new rules.

You will understand which stainless steel products fall under CBAM, how default and actual emissions values shape costs, how imports from different regions are affected and what changes are expected with the proposed 2028 expansion to downstream products. You will also learn how low-emission European stainless steel can help manage costs and compliance..
