Therma 253MA®stainless steel: A better alternative for heat treatment

Outokumpu has partnered in China with Guangdong Strong Metal Technology Co., Ltd. (SMT) to promote its MA series of heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel. The two companies co-organized a series of seminars introducing their innovative products and services. Over 100 industry professionals attended these seminars. During the seminars, participants also discussed about the future developments and applications of heat-resistant materials.

Industrial furnaces are widely used in various industries. The quality and service life of a furnace greatly depend on its heat treated components. Currently, austenitic stainless steel is one of the most widely used heat-resistant products for the inner walls and internal parts of industrial furnaces. To improve the performance of the current heat-resistance stainless steel, Outokumpu developed a MA heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel with Therma 253MA® as its leading product.

Compared with the widely-used 310S (1.4858) heat-resistant steel, the MA product line has the following enhanced features: stronger high tempertaure creep, and greater mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. These  properties of the MA series greatly extends the service life of furnace equipments. Due to its low nickel content, the MA products also offer customers significant reduction in cost, thus economic efficiency.

Reciprocal relationship for greater mutual success

The co-operations between Outokumpu and SMT have proven to be great success. Earlier this year, SMT ordered a test batch of Therma 253MA® stainless steel from Outokumpu for its heat treatment equipment, which now has a record of secure operations for over ten months. Meanwhile, SMT is considering of applying Therma 253MA® in other components of its heat treatment equipment, such as bars and wires.

"The collaboration with Strong Metal Technology proves to be a win-win situation for both companies," said Sun Chang-Ching, APAC Market Development Director of Outokumpu. "Looking into the future, we hope to continue our cooperation with leading local enterprises and draw on each other's strengths to improve our service to local customers."
