Responsible supply chain

We make the strictest possible demands of ourselves as an organization. But our efforts don't end there. To qualify to work with Outokumpu, our suppliers and contractors are held to the same stringent requirements.

This means that our customers' supply chains – and, in turn, those of their customers – benefit from the rigorous standards and high transparency we uphold. We track data at every step, and provide continually updated product statements and declarations covering everything we do.

Strict demands

Our environmental work is guided by the Group Environment, Health, Safety and Quality policy. Management systems and work routines implement this policy at each production site. All of Outokumpu's production sites employ certified ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems. Typically, energy efficiency is integrated into environmental management systems, although many of the Group's sites have also achieved ISO 50001 certification for energy efficiency.

The functioning of these systems is monitored using both internal and external audits. In the long term all sites will be also certified against the coming ISO safety standard. See our ISO and OHSAS registrations.

See our site-specific certifications.

Our suppliers and contractors are held to the same stringent requirements

We expect our business partners, subcontractors and suppliers to perform according to the law, and we recommend familiarization with our Code of Conduct, corporate responsibility policy and similar standards.

We have internal supplier requirements that were developed and implemented in 2014. These requirements include sustainability principles, but are not available publicly. In addition to these requirements, we monitor the performance of our suppliers and subcontractors through auditing. Regular external audits are carried out in conformance with local environmental, health, safety and quality management systems.

For example, before entering the melt shop site, steel scrap is tested on arrival to ensure that no radioactive components are present.

Tracked data at every step

We will provide sufficient information to interested parties, to enable them to understand the environmental impact of our activities.

Outokumpu's environmental and energy reporting, data management and analysis are supported by an Energy & Environment Reporting (EER) system which provides internal reporting and analysis tools for all of the Group's production sites. The availability of robust and verified data is the starting point for managing sustainability throughout a product's life cycle.

Outokumpu has its own ferrochrome production, setting it apart from competitors: it means that Outokumpu knows its own supply chain better than the others in the industry.

The mine at Kemi guarantees access to the raw material most important to stainless steel - the chromium that makes steel stainless, long into the future. Kemi's mine produces chromite concentrate and raw material for the ferrochrome works in nearby Tornio.

When it comes to working conditions and processes, all Outokumpu sites uphold the same high standards. More information about working conditions can be found on the Safety section.

Updated product statements and declarations

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) form the basis for calculating sustainability performance over a product's lifecycle. Environmental Product Declarations are standardized and verified externally. Outokumpu is the only stainless steel producer to provide Environmental Product Declarations for the whole product portfolio.

For the construction industry sector, we have also issued two fact sheets on stainless steel products in relation to green building schemes. As a complement to the LEED fact sheet we have created a credit point summary based on our own estimates of where our stainless steel has the potential to help achieve LEED points.
