We offer quantitative and verified information on the environmental impact of our main products for the architecture, building and construction in the form of environmental product declarations and LEED fact sheets for green building. With the help of this information, our customers know exact environmental impacts and energy needs of our products and can calculate how these affect the life cycle of their structure.
Environmental product declarations
Our environmental product declarations or EPDs offer life-cycle inventory data of our main products, making it possible for our customers to calculate sustainability performance over their product’s life cycle. EPDs are standardized and verified externally.
These are public documents that describe the main environmental effects and energy needs of the Group’s stainless steel grades throughout their supply chain.
We have issued four EPDs for stainless steel in construction. The data is based on a representative mix of the production. The EPDs were issued by IBU, Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V., and they are valid for a period of five years.
Outokumpu is a pioneer in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a sustainability-oriented building certification scheme developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. LEED certification standards apply to buildings that achieve high energy efficiency and use sustainable materials. The sustainable characteristics of Outokumpu stainless steel, such as high recycled content and long service life, are rewarded in this scheme.
We offer LEED documentation for our products, which means that designers who select Outokumpu stainless steel can gain LEED points for their building. As a complement to the LEED fact sheet we have created a credit point summary based on our own estimates of where our stainless steel has the potential to help in achieving LEED points. Outokumpu is also a USGBC member since 2015.
