As part of our wider social engagement we participate in several corporate responsibility forums, such as Global Compact Nordic Network, the UN Global Compact goals and World Steel Association’s Sustainable Development Charter. Outokumpu's sustainability performance is widely recognized. The ratings in the field of sustainable asset management and responsible investments find Outokumpu amongst the top companies, if not the best. We are also extremely proud of the recognition from our peers.

Indexes and ratings

Outokumpu is rated by several corporate responsibility indexes. Being rated by these research companies offers Outokumpu the opportunity to differentiate itself from its competitors as an expert in corporate responsibility. It is also recognition of the fact that Outokumpu has succeeded in fulfilling certain criteria of having responsible operations. On the other hand, the independent indexes offer the chance to see which areas of corporate responsibility still have room for improvement.

Outokumpu is one of the top-scoring companies in the steel industry. Outokumpu is the best rated stainless steel and 6th among all the steel companies in the RobecoSAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) – the leading global benchmark in the growing field of Sustainability Investing and Corporate Sustainability in 2017.

Outokumpu has been reconfirmed as a constituent of the Ethibel Sustainability Index (ESI) Excellence Europe since 18/10/2019. Outokumpu was also reconfirmed for inclusion in the Ethibel EXCELLENCE Investment Register since 2/2/2018. This selection by Forum ETHIBEL indicates that the company performs better than average in its sector in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Outokumpu is also rated by oekom and Ecovadis, who awarded us a gold recognition level. This excellent result includes Outokumpu among the top 5% performers evaluated by EcoVadis.

Last year, Outokumpu also improved its rating by Carbon Disclosure Project. Sustainalytics gave us a good rating for instance in ethics and environmental performance, but improvement areas were human capital and safety. Nordea’s research gave Outokumpu positive feedback in circular economy, decreasing personnel, energy use and climate change but improvement areas included increasing water use, water discharges, waste and employee turnover.

Science Based Targets Initiative

Outokumpu signed the membership in the Science Based Targets Initiative in 2016. We developed and proposed a science-based reduction target on direct and indirect CO2 emissions intensity and included the upstream emissions in the reporting.

Outokumpu forerunner in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) – Green building offers both environmental and economic opportunity. The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is the developer of the LEED, Outokumpu has LEED documentation available and therefore designers selecting Outokumpu stainless steel can gain LEED points for the building. LEED recognizes buildings that achieve high-energy efficiency and use sustainable materials that meet documentation requirements. The sustainable characteristics of Outokumpu stainless steel, like high recycled content and long service life, are rewarded in this scheme. To further demonstrate our commitment to sustainable building, Outokumpu joined USGBC as a member in 2015.

International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF)

During 2015 Outokumpu resigned in worldsteel’s sustainability development charter. Worldsteel member companies and associations have committed to seven sustainability principles, as outlined in the worldsteel Sustainable Development Policy: environmental protection, safety and health, local communities, ethical standards, stakeholder engagement, disclosure and transparency, value for stakeholders.



ISSF Best New Technology and Sustainability awards 2017

Outokumpu was awarded both Best New Technology and Sustainability Awards by International Staintless Steel Forum (ISSF) in 2017. Sustainability Award was given for implementing new technologies to reduce transport emissions. The company, in cooperation with a local transport supplier, had made significant efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels. As part of the project, all the company trucks were converted to biofuels. Also, the company, in association with Swedish business, academia and government authorities, has undertaken a new electric road project, that aims to reduce the use of fossil fuels with the help of electrification in road transport.


Supplier awards 2017

In 2017, Outokumpu has received Steel Excellence Award for Best Operational Improvements from leading industry organization, American Metal Market (AMM). Our Long Products business area and its bar operations were awarded Supplier of the Year by ThyssenKrupp Materials North America’s Copper and Brass division, one of Outokumpu Long Products’ important customers in the US.
