Outokumpu has endowed two charitable foundations to sponsor academic research into the technology of stainless steels and to provide engineers, designers and users with information to improve their understanding of this family of materials.
The foundations are steered by a board made up of senior members of the Outokumpu and external specialists.

The basis of sponsorship
The foundations have established a research programme in selected technical areas in the development, production and applications of stainless steels. These areas are discussed with research institutes or university departments having relevant expertise, projects are agreed and the full-time postgraduate studentships are then advertised.
Studentships are normally for PhD or research Masters courses. Conditions of support are flexible, but are related to those of existing state studentships, for example the EPSRC CASE award scheme in the UK. Applications from students are received and processed normally by the university department in question and applicants must be able to meet the residence and entrance requirements of the university. Projects are also performed at research institutes having specialist expertise within priority areas.
The research projects are carried out in cooperation, as appropriate, with the technical resources of Outokumpu companies in Finland, Sweden and the UK. This enables students to gain familiarity with industrial technology and R&D practices. However, there is no commitment to employment on either side.
