Corrosion Resistance of Austenitic-Ferritic (Duplex) Steels

Corrosion Resistance of Austenitic-Ferritic (Duplex) Steels

Wet Corrosion

The most widely exploited property of this category of steels is their good resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

They are quite superior to common austenitic steels in this respect.

Today's modern steels with correctly balanced compositions, for example Duplex 2205, also possess good pitting properties and are not sensitive to intergranular corrosion after welding, as were the "old" austenitic-ferritic steels.

The most modern duplex stainless steels with very high Cr, Mo and N-contents (super duplex =  SAF 2507) have better corrosion resistance than the 2205-type and are in many cases comparable to the 6-Mo steels (254 SMO®).
