The grade 4521 is an optimal material choice for water heating applications, such as heat exchangers, boilers and water heating tanks. This grade may also be used in pipes for tap water and in other use for drinking-water systems. EN 1.4521 grade has an approval for use in drinking water systems by German (DVGW) and Swiss (SVGW) authorities.

Outokumpu grade 4521 is a dual stabilized ferritic stainless steel containing 2% Molybdenum. The grade Outokumpu 4521 is equivalent to the European code EN 1.4521 and American standard marking ASTM 444.
Thanks to a molybdenum alloying and rather high 18 % chromium content, the grade has excellent corrosion properties. Corrosion resistance is comparable to the austenitic grade 1.4401 in various applications. As all the ferritic grades, grade 1.4521 is not susceptible to chloride induced stress corrosion cracking.
Stabilization is made using both titanium and niobium. Thanks to stabilization the weldability of the material is good and also forming properties, especially deep drawability, are improved. Since ferritic grades are less prone to work hardening, the forces required in forming operations are lower when compared to e.g. austenitics. Stabilization by titanium helps to prevent forming defects like roping, which is typical for the ferritic grade 1.4016. As a result of niobium alloying, fully stabilized microstructure can be reached with lower titanium levels, which improves the surface properties and decreases tool wear when forming. Elongation to fracture values up to 30% (A80) can be achieved. Because of a fully ferritic microstructure thermal conductivity is higher and thermal expansion coefficient lower when compared to steels having an austenitic atomic structure. More detailed technical information can be found from Outokumpu data sheets.
Outokumpu 4521 is available as cold rolled 2B on thickness range 0,50mm to 2,00mm.
