Processing and Standards Development in Stainless Steel Rebar

Outokumpu develops its processing of Stainless Steel Rebar to add value to its product offering and ensures that it offers a quality service too.

Over the last ten years Outokumpu Stainless Ltd has produced stainless steel reinforcing bar (SSR) in coil at its ASR Rod Mill in Sheffield. This has been sold for further processing, before use in concrete structures which are exposed to high levels of chloride contamination. Taking a leading role in the company’s long products business strategy, the operation has now begun decoiling and straightening stainless steel reinforcing bar in the first stage of establishing the company’s bar finishing facility.

Straight lengths of SSR are produced in the standard lengths of 6m and 12m or any length up to 12m in British Standard (BS6744) with diameters of 12mm to 25mm.   Shipping to mainland Europe is via flat back lorries whereas export further afield is by sea, normally in closed containers.

Packaging is in bundles, which reflects the weight of the original coil that has been hot rolled from the billet. The billet is produced at the company’s melt shop in Sheffield. Each production batch is tensile tested and the mill test certificate for each bundle therefore reflects the alloy composition of the cast and the mechanical properties of the production batch.

The standard for SSR employed by engineers around the world for about 70% of all contracts is BS6744. Outokumpu’s decision to extend its capabilities in this market importantly coincides with Outokumpu’s proprietary alloy LDX 2101® being recently included in BS6744 under its EN designation of 1.4162. The cost stability of this low nickel alloy coupled with high corrosion resistance is an important development for engineers around the world who have been looking for an approved alloy with performance at a competitive price. Future developments will see Outokumpu enhancing the diameter availability at both ends of the size spectrum.

Outokumpu is committed to offering personal contact from our construction specialists in our sales companies around the world.
