Stainless steel R&D experts gather in Helsinki, Finland, for the European Stainless Steel Conference on June 10-13.

Once every two years stainless, the European stainless steel industry takes a look at stainless steel from the scientific and market viewpoint at the European Stainless Steel Conference. The conference is a forum for the industry to review the latest developments in production, grades and applications. It is the largest gathering of stainless steel researchers in Europe.

The conference is traditionally organized in the home country of a major producer. The 2008, and 6th edition of the conference is for the first time held in Helsinki, Finland, at the domicile of Outokumpu, a leading stainless steel producer and the leader in many special grades. The conference will address issues of today’s challenges in society, particularly in terms of sustainability, and what roles stainless steel plays in meeting those challenges. Specific topics include the availability of alloying elements and alloy substitution, new grades, and alternative production routes. Topics are covered by representatives of research institutes, the academia, and corporations.

With the conference introduction delivered by Outokumpu CEO Juha Rantanen, Outokumpu technology experts will deliver nine presentations over three days of sessions, covering aspects ranging from product properties to processing.

As the unofficial host of the conference, Outokumpu will complement the sessions with a plant tour to the Outokumpu Tornio Works in northern Finland, one the world’s largest stainless steel mills and the world’s most integrated single-site operation.

The 6th European Stainless Steel Conference is held at the Scandic Grand Marina Hotel in Helsinki. For further information on the conference, go to http://www.stainless08.com.
