Hannu, could you tell us a little bit about the scope of your work?
I am responsible for production, safety, cost-effectiveness, quality and staff at the RAP5- line. (R stands for Rolling, A for Annealing and P for Pickling.)

What was your motivation for applying?
I have always wanted to work where it is easy to see your results. To me, Outokumpu is a great company, because it is a large company and there are a lot of places to work – both in Finland and abroad. I used to work as the Section Manager of the Finishing Line here at the Cold Rolling Plant and now I am the Section Manager of the RAP5 Line. The position as Section Manager has challenging responsibilities and covers a lot of different areas, and I like that. It keeps me in constant development as an individual and as a professional.

Could you tell us something about your responsibilities?
I manage 50 people in production and 10 at the office. That involves, among other things, safety and motivation. I plan and manage the productivity of line RAP5 and control the quality of stainless steel. The cost-effectiveness of production and environmental awareness are the two main responsibilities. And naturally the development of all of my areas of responsibility, of course. It is my job to make decisions on how to produce our stainless steel and to prioritize work at the RAP5 line. My reports go directly to the Production Manager of the Cold Rolling Plant. In my position, I help create success by achieving results as demanded.  These achievements are not personal but a joint effort of the whole organization.

What are your formal and personal qualifications for this job?
I have a Bachelor of Science in Process Engineering. After finishing my studies, I worked in different positions; Development Engineer, Production Planning Engineer, Business Development Engineer, Section Manager of Logistics, Section Manager of the Finishing Line and now I am the Section Manager of the RAP5 Line. All of these positions have been at the Tornio Works. I have some experience from various internal projects, such as being part of a project group that built the finishing line in Terneuzen, Netherlands, and finishing production. Today, regular meetings with other sites around the world are part of my work.

What are, in your mind, the possibilities with a future at Outokumpu?
This job is very special because the line I manage is very special. It is the bottleneck at Tornio and the support from the whole organization is great. The colleagues and the people working the floor are what make this job so special. And the work tasks constantly develop. I have worked with other things here at Tornio, and all of the different positions have helped me strengthen my weaker points and support my stronger ones.

And, finally, what would you tell a possible future colleague about Outokumpu and this job?
This position is great for someone with ambition and drive, who wants to meet production challenges now and in the future. And you can also see the results of your work on the Intranet on a daily basis. This job is perfect if you want to lead development within stainless steel and if you want to develop your management skills. Outokumpu is a big company and it opens possibilities to deepen your professional knowledge and expertise. It also offers a wide range of new challenges for those who want to change their position.
