Nathan, could you tell us a little bit about the scope of your work?
My role is that of Team Worker within Outokumpu Stainless Distribution.  The main purpose of my role is to operate the coil polishing line safely and efficiently during the shift.

What was your motivation for applying?
I applied to Outokumpu as it had a good reputation within the local area as an employer and is at the forefront of the stainless steel industry, a perception I feel is generally held by people in the local area. I have been aware of the Sheffield sites for some years and I also have family connections at the company.

Could you tell us something about your responsibilities?
I am responsible for the quality of all material that the line produces and for ensuring that all documentation is updated correctly. I have full responsibility for all consumables and am accountable for housekeeping and health & safety in my area. Occasionally I visit customers to understand more about their requirements and processes.

Reporting to the Shift Operations Manager, I am the only individual on my shift that can operate the coil polisher, so I am fully responsible for the decisions that have to be made. The greatest achievement within my role has been my involvement in the successful trials of a brand new product for a new internationally based customer.

What are your formal and personal qualifications for this job?
In my opinion, no formal educational qualifications are required for my role. However, what I feel is more important are the work experiences and personal qualities I bring, for example, commitment to quality, focus on safety and enthusiasm and dedication to team work. An FLT license is essential!

Are there any special possibilities and advantages with your job?
The variety and opportunity to constantly learn new things and the continual development of the company locally and globally is what makes my job special. The fun comes from the interaction I have with my fellow team workers, some of whom I socialize with outside of work.

And, finally, what would you tell a possible future colleague about Outokumpu and this job?
I would definitely recommend friends and family to work for Outokumpu. I feel it is an exciting place to work where everyone can play an active part in Outokumpu’s vision to be the number one in stainless steel.
