Outokumpu

Reference Lists

The following list presents a number of desalination projects to which Outokumpu (or former entities) has supplied stainless steel to. The lists present major projects.

RO

Outokumpu has, supplied stainless steel piping for high-pressure systems to around 40 SWRO plants. In most cases the material used has been 254 SMO. Corrosion has been reported from three plants, all with other stainless steel grades than recommended by Outokumpu, 1.4438 (317L) for Medina-Yanbu and 1.4539 (904L) for Alicante and Al Dur.

Thermal

The material supplied has been used either for lining or as solid plate, never in form of clad steel. The most interesting and new design concept is without any doubts evaporator shells made of solid stainless steel. Highly alloyed stainless steel has been used for MSF once-through plants due to the very hostile conditions, but even more interesting is the use of duplex grades for MSF recycling and MED plants.

The first such MSF plant ever built is Melittah in Libya, the second being Skikda in Algeria. Another even more cost-effective variant of this design concept is DualDuplexTM , i.e. a combination of 2205 and the less costly LDX 2101 for the shells. This concept will be used for at least three major Middle East projects, Taweelah B extension in Abu Dhabi, Jebel Ali L in Dubai and Ras Abu Fontas in Qatar.
The most common material for MED plants is stainless steel 316L, but several plants in Saudi Arabia have been built with 254 SMO as shell material. However, the DualDuplexTM concept has also been introduced for MED plants, Sharjah in UAE and Hidd in Bahrain, where 2205 will be used for the most hostile conditions and 2304 for less aggressive conditions.
