Ms. Annesen plunged into a hectic search for material – a testing task at this time when the world stainless steel market is in short supply. By the end of the week, she could declare the mission successfully accomplished. The unusual – and often unfeasible – test of a customer-supplier relationship exemplifies the exclusive nature of cooperation between the two companies.
“Difficult times like this are the best test of cooperation,” says Vice President Niels Qvortup, the Grundfos Group Purchasing Director.
Karsten Lundgaard, General Manager of Outokumpu A/S, explains the principles of the cooperation, “Grundfos expects us to stand behind them at all times. We welcome the positive challenges that come with the trust, because the challenges give us an opportunity to overdo ourselves and improve. You either live with challenges, however demanding while realistic, or you disappear from business. Grundfos is a customer that we can grow with, one that well matches our capabilities.”
Mr. Qvortrup continues on partnerships that go far deeper than the traditional buyer-seller relationship, “Both sides today look for long-term business in the effort to maximize profits. This necessitates an optimal mix of all aspects of business, from quality to logistics, not only the best long-term price.”
The partnership between Grundfos and Outokumpu involves all levels of business from technical to commercial, even ethical questions as Grundfos places a heavy emphasis on corporate social responsibility. Ms. Annesen says the partnership relies on open conduct and constant dialogue: “We speak together all the time, exchanging ideas and beliefs.”
Mr. Lundgaard remarks that genuine dialogue is a foundation and prerequisite of true partnership, commenting on its importance for business, “True partnership ultimately helps both partners to reach their ultimate goals.” Grundfos is today one of the world’s leading pump manufacturers, a growth-oriented company that posts a ten percent annual increase in sales. Outokumpu seeks to become the undisputed Number One in stainless steel, a goal charted by achievements in commercial excellence.
“The gist of our commercial excellence is creating true value for customers – something that customers see as making a difference and answering their real business needs,” Mr. Lundgaard concludes, citing Grundfos as a prime example.
