Simply the Best

As Outokumpu campaigns for better workplace safety, a DeCo Media film “Make the Right Choice” wins first prize in Europe’s biggest audiovisual media contest.

In 2004 Outokumpu hired DeCo Media, a Finnish multimedia company, to produce a film on the many dangers that lurk in the everyday operations at plants, how to recognize those dangers, what to do, and what not to do. The film, distributed on DVD in five languages and titled “Make the Right Choice,” was made available to all workers in autumn 2005.

Not only did the film hit a nerve among workers, but the international media community also took heed. The film won Special Award in the training films category of the 2006 WorldMediaFestival, the biggest contest for the audiovisual media in Europe. This was just the beginning. The film captivated jury after jury. It went on to win Grand Award and, next, Grand Prix, the highest recognition of the festival. The festival jury described the film as “simply the best.”

This year some 600 films from 24 countries competed at the festival, held in Hamburg, Germany. A decisive evaluation criterion besides artistic and technical merit was effective communication of the message to the target group.

“Make the Right Choice” achieved fame already in 2005 when it was awarded for Creative Excellence at the U.S. International Film and Video Festival.

The film’s success is in line with Outokumpu’s corporate goal of becoming the undisputed Number One in stainless steel – “simply the best, better than all the rest.”
