As part of our wider social engagement we participate in several corporate responsibility forums, such as Global Compact Nordic Network, the UN Global Compact goals and World Steel Association’s Sustainable Development Charter. Outokumpu's sustainability performance is widely recognized. The ratings in the field of sustainable asset management and responsible investments find Outokumpu amongst the top companies, if not the best. We are also extremely proud of the recognition from our peers.
Outokumpu is listed on a number of corporate responsibility indexes. Being included in these indexes offers Outokumpu the opportunity to differentiate itself from its competitors as an expert in corporate responsibility. It is also recognition of the fact that Outokumpu has succeeded in fulfilling certain criteria of having responsible operations. On the other hand, the independent indexes offer the chance to see which areas of corporate responsibility still have room for improvement.
Outokumpu is one of the top-scoring companies in the steel industry. Outokumpu is invited to and participates the RobecoSAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) – the leading global benchmark in the growing field of Sustainability Investing and Corporate Sustainability in 2016 and will be included again in the next RobecoSAM’s Sustainability Yearbook beginning 2017.
Outokumpu has been reconfirmed for inclusion in the Ethibel EXCELLENCE Investment Register since 12/10/2015. This selection by Forum ETHIBEL indicates that the company performs better than average in its sector in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Outokumpu forerunner in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) – Green building offers both environmental and economic opportunity. The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is the developer of the LEED, Outokumpu has LEED documentation available and therefore designers selecting Outokumpu stainless steel can gain LEED points for the building. LEED recognizes buildings that achieve high-energy efficiency and use sustainable materials that meet documentation requirements. The sustainable characteristics of Outokumpu stainless steel, like high recycled content and long service life, are rewarded in this scheme. To further demonstrate our commitment to sustainable building, Outokumpu joined USGBC as a member in 2015.

Scientific Based Targets Initiative
Outokumpu signed the membership in the Scientific Based Targets Initiative in 2016. We committed to to develop a science-based emission reduction target in line with the Initiative’s rules.
International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF)
During 2015 Outokumpu resigned in worldsteel’s sustainability development charter. Worldsteel member companies and associations have committed to seven sustainability principles, as outlined in the worldsteel Sustainable Development Policy: environmental protection, safety and health, local communities, ethical standards, stakeholder engagement, disclosure and transparency, value for stakeholders.
Metaal Compagnie Brabant (MCB) Netherlands
Outokumpu wins best supplier award 2016 at MCB Netherlands. The award was won thanks to great performance development in the vendor monitoring program.
The International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) has granted the ISSF Sustainability Award every year. The recognition was based on Outokumpu's determined actions and great achievements in reducing waste to landfill and increasing material efficiency in Sheffield.
ISSF Sustainability Award 2016: ISSF rewarded water cycling in Mexinox. In Mexico Outokumpu’s cold rolling mill is located in a dry, arid area, where groundwater is a valuable asset for people.
ISSF Sustainability Award 2014: A longterm study on occupational health of Outokumpu’s employees in the Tornio stainless steel mill and Kemi mine for 30 years. The study shows that there is no added risk of cancer to individuals working in steel mills and living nearby.

Royal Society for the prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)
In 2015, Outokumpu’s melt shop inUK has won the RoSPA Gold award for a 5th consecutive year. The melt shop team has put in for more than a decade of risk reduction, hazard spotting and raising of SBOs (safety behavior observations). During the five years of successive gold awards we have had only one lost time injury. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) encourages improvement in occupational health and safety management.
International Chromium Development Association (ICDA)
Outokumpu wins International Chromium Development Association’s award on safety in 2015. This acknowledgement highlights Outokumpu’s long term safety effort and developments both in Kemi Mine and Tornio stainless steel plant. Around half of the personnel working daily at the Kemi Mine are contractor employees, and their participation on safety actions is 100%.
