​​​​​Outokumpu Experience – the most anticipated industry event of 2015 – is underway now in Berlin, Germany. Envisioning “a world that lasts forever”, the day-and-a-half event focuses on innovation, sustainability and advanced materials.


Packed with inspiring, informative presentations, Outokumpu Experience offers the nearly 500 guests from 50 nationalities an unparalleled opportunity to network, share and discover.

The first day of the event starts ​with a series of keynote presentations lead by Outokumpu President and CEO, Mika Seitovirta. ​​He says:

​ After his opening words, the spotlight belongs to guest speakers – Alf Rehn, Ranga Yogeshwar and Dong-Ping Wong – who explore with Outokumpu Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Pekka Erkkilä, the ways in which innovation and sustainability drive business.

Afternoon breakout sessions lead by both industry and Outokumpu experts drill deep into trends and innovations in the segments of energy, mobility, building and infrastructure, and home appliances. The range of applications created to utilize the qualities of stainless steel grades is impressive – and a result from various combined knowledge.

A stunning backdrop of displays at Outokumpu Experience demonstrates the uncommon versatility and utility of Outokumpu products. Several customers also have exhibits, underscoring the long-term partnerships between Outokumpu and those who rely on us for innovation, sustainability and value.

With displays featuring the unique Miele honeycomb washer drum, a fire-resistant rescue container for miners caught in underground accidents and a gleaming DeLorean – the stage is set for meaningful discovery at Outokumpu Experience!​

Among the morning’s Experience visitors is Aashish Sanghvi from Raajratna Ventures in India. As an ABC industry representative, he hopes to get the most out of Outokumpu’s “new grades and new possibilities”, and started exploring those areas immediately with Outokumpu’s Techincal Sales Manager Thomas Kirchhartz from Krefeld, Germany. “I’m also looking forward to the ABC seminar during the afternoon breakout sessions.”

 

 

 
Joanna McIntyre and Elisa Hannan from Stainless Steel World magazine are a sea of color among the suits. “We came to hear what Outokumpu is bringing to the market in terms of innovation. We are particularly interested in the Energy & Heavy Industries and Buildings & Infrastructure sessions.”

 

 

 
As the first keynote speaker, Professor Alf Rehn captured the audience's attention by challenging our thinking and business innovation.” We are resolving non-problems", while we should be focusing on society's true needs. According to Rehn, we need to start pushing that agenda. It is no quantum leap, but rather small steps that start with looking at the projects we are working on - is this truly something I want to be part of, is this making the world a better place and resolving true problems - or are they just best practices?

 

 

 
Buildings are a substantial cause of CO2 emissions. As a designer, Architect Dong-Ping Wong dove into the topic of curbing emissions by taking sustainability further. He served us with a question: “Can architecture give back?” Would it be possible to turn sustainability into productivity? After walking us through some of his recent projects, for example the Plus pool in New York and the flat buildings in Dallas, the answer seems to be yes. The design and materials have managed to improve both energy-efficiency and quality of life ‒ by giving people access to swim safely in a polluted river.

 

 

 
What can we offer right now, apart from our curious and innovative minds? Outokumpu Executive Vice President and Chief Technology officer Pekka Erkkilä presented some stainless novelties, Supra 316plus, Core 4622 and Forta H-series – all of which offer new and wider possibilities. In his presentation on the H-series, Erkkilä spoke in-depth about the automotive industry. “Tightening legislation enhances the need for breakthrough lightweight materials that impact the total weight of a car.”

 

 

 
Afternoon breakout sessions gathered up over 100 people per segment. The most popular of four streams, Energy & Heavy Industries, Home Appliances, Automotive & Transportation and Building & Infrastructure, was the Energy segment with over 120 listeners. This audience is getting inspired about Building & Infrastructure.

 

 

 
Architect and Director of Kohn Pederson Fox Associates’ Hong Kong office Florence Chan is introducing the impressive project of Ping’An Finance Center. The trend of exterior wall design is transferring from glass to solid components. “An architect, stainless steel offers visual quality that is very different and unique compared to its competitors. We find it very attractive for timeless buildings.”

 

 

 
Andreas Brückner from Weber Machinenbau GmbH appreciated the day’s presentations. “We have heard very interesting speakers with good ideas and innovations.” As for what comes to the product category renewal launched today, Andreas Brückner, working with foodtech and building machines, finds it intriguing. “In the future, I might want to try something new aside from the grades we typically use, which are 4301 and LDX,” he says.

 

 

 
“Supra 316plus could be a substitute for the standard material we use,” says Josef Hajda, who works as a Sourcing and Purchasing Manager for chimney manufacturer Schiedel s.v.o. Jussi Kannisto, Technical Marketing Specialist in R&D of Outokumpu, is going to send him a sample. Josef Hajda has been in the industry long enough to know the grades, but the new product categories might come in handy for example with novelties. “We can easily see what the place of a new material is.”
