Finnish sculptor Antti Immonen creates his artworks by means of an intricate process, working smaller bits into grand designs. In his recent artwork, Narcissus, the result is a wondrous sculpture that not only provides a mirror to the audience, but is also a mirror image of itself.
“The mirror held up to the audience is a common motif among stainless steel sculptures. With Narcissus I thought it would be interesting to add yet one more dimension of reflectivity.”
Great material, great to weld
Artworks like this are not created out of artistic inspiration alone. Everything needs to be planned out in advance from material choice through to working methods. In this case, Antti decided to experiment, first creating the design by computer and thereafter proceeding with the workmanship, which included plasma cutting, TIG welding and final polishing. The finished Narcissus sculpture is on show at the artist’s atelier in Kuopio, Finland.
The decision to go with Outokumpu 316plus was thanks to the initiative of
Juha Kärki, who at the time worked as Sales Manager in Tornio. He suggested employing the new material. Antti, pleased with the performance of Outokumpu stainless steel from previous projects, took on the offer and once again found that the material was up to the task.
“I was working with very small pieces just 2 mm thick. But thankfully everything went well and the new material performed perfectly. I truly enjoy welding stainless steel.”
When extra strength is needed
The new Outokumpu 316plus contains enhanced levels of chromium compared to standard grades. It’s composition is designed to match or surpass typical EN 1.4404 / 316L corrosion resistance. It also offers remarkably higher proof strength in combination with same degree of work hardening.
The composition of the new grade makes it appropriate for replacing standard grades in many applications especially when high strength and good formability are demanded as well as excellent weldability is a must. This includes heat exchangers, piping, water treatment applications as well as architectural applications such as indoor and outdoor facades.
