Duplex and high strength​


​Duplex and other high strength stainless steels, Rp ​0.2 > 400 MPa (PRE 18 to 43)

  • Duplex stainless steel products for high strength, corrosion resistance, and enhanced resistance to stress corrosion cracking. They do not need to be painted or coated, meaning minimal maintenance
  • H-series austenitic stainless steel products provide high strength and ductility and have been used in the automotive industry for over 10 years to create lighter, more durable components
  • Temper rolled stainless steel products provide high strength and high hardness. They are variants of standard stainless steels like Core 304/4301, Supra 316L/4404, and Core 301LN/4318​


​​​Unlike carbon steels, Forta range duplex products, with their superior corrosion resistance, do not need to be painted or coated, making them a more cost effective long-term choice.

Because duplex produ​cts are also high strength, thinner gauges can potentially be used, which saves on material costs.

Duplex also has a similar thermal expansion to carbon steels making it possible to combine the two in the same application.​​

Temper rolled

Temper rolled products are standard stainless steels like Core 304/4301 and Supra 316L/4404 treated for higher strength and hardness, and are commonly used in tanks, bus chassis, and railcars.

They offer better corrosion resistance than carbon steel and do not need to be coated or painted.

​​Duplex stainless steel grades are superior to standard austenitics with regard to stress corrosion cracking resistance, and duplex grades are also good in a number of acidic and alkaline environments.

Duplex products

Outokumpu Forta range duplex stainless steels offer excellent possibilities for the construction of challenging and durable structures. However, due to their high strength the forming process is somewhat different than with austenitic or ferritic steels. Outokumpu can assist you with all technical aspects of fabrication. We can provide you with the necessary training, computer simulations, and detailed instructions

H-series products

Forta H400 and H500 are readily weldable with all conventional welding methods. No preheating or post-weld treatment is required. For applications in particularly critical conditions, temper colors or scaling should be removed chemically (for example, by pickling) and/or mechanically (for example, by grinding).

Temper rolled products

​For temper-rolled austenitic stainless steels, the required forces and the elastic return are bigger compared with carbon steels. Because of their high ductility and strong work hardening, it is recommended to use sharp tools, effectiv​e cooling, and an adequate feed tool. Austenitic stainless steels in general have excellent weldability and are readily weldable with all conventional welding methods, including MMA, MIG, MAG, TIG, SAW, LBW and RSW, excluding gas welding.

Duplex pressure vessel approvals

Forta DX 2304, Forta DX 2205, Forta SDX 100, and Forta SDX 2507 are listed in EN 10028-7:2007.

European material approval EAM 0045-01:2012/01 for Forta LDX 2101 is available for cold rolled 0.5–6.4 mm and hot rolled 3.0–10.0 mm.

In ASME II-D 2013,Forta DX 2205 (S31803 and S32205). Forta EDX 2304 (S32304), Forta SDX 100 (S32760) and Forta SDX 2507 (S32750).are listed for general use in the temperature range -30–316 °C. Data for Forta LDX 2101 and Forta LDX 2404 can be found in ASME code case 2418-1 and 2780 respectively.
