Europe is the biggest business area at Outokumpu, covering sales and production of coil and plate products in Europe as well as sales and service network in Europe, Middle-East, Africa and Asia-Pacific.
Our in-depth customer understanding, product quality and technical expertise form the foundation of our competitiveness in the EMEA region. Outokumpu’s facilities in Germany and Sweden were among others the first ones to invent stainless steel in the early 1900s.
Highly specialized mills
The Europe business area comprises two integrated stainless steel mills (melt shop, hot rolling mill and cold rolling mill) in Avesta, Sweden and Tornio, Finland; five cold rolling mills in Dahlerbrück, Dillenburg and Krefeld, Germany and Degerfors and Nyby, Sweden and finishing unit in Terneuzen, the Netherlands.
The Tornio site in Finland is one of the largest and most cost-efficient production sites in the world, and it focuses on high-volume austenitic and ferritic grades. Our mills in Germany focus on more customized deliveries of ferritic, martensitic and austenitic grades, including bright annealed surfaces. Close proximity to customers in Germany, the largest stainless steel market in Europe, offers us a key competitive advantage. Avesta and Nyby focus on high-performance austenitic, duplex and heat-resistant grades. High-performance grades are still produced at the same site where duplex was invented. Degerfors focuses in producing quarto plate for heavy industry applications.
Also Outokumpu's Ferrochrome smelter is located in the same site in Tornio, and chrome is mined from our own mine in nearby Kemi.
Service center network
Moreover, our customers are served by our coil and plate service centers in Europe and Asia. Coil service centers offer cut-to-length slitting, polishing and brushing as well as traverse winder and edge preparation services, and plate service centers finishing services that include plasma, laserjet and waterjet cutting, bending and machining.
