Production and Storage of Food and Drink

World leading companies in the food & drink industry rely on Outokumpu for their storage and production tank needs. The grade of choice for these applications is increasingly Outokumpu's high-strength duplex stainless steel.

The characteristic properties of stainless steel make it the ideal material for a wide variety of tank applications. For example, the protective film on the surface of stainless steel safeguards health and sanitation, the high corrosion resistance of stainless steel removes the need for coating, and the easy washing of stainless steel safeguards against cross-contamination when contents are changed.

Much as the outcome of Outokumpu’s active involvement, high-strength duplex stainless steels have emerged as the ideal material for storage tanks in recent years. These steels have the same or better corrosion resistance properties as conventional austenitic grades, but are also twice as strong, which allows for substantial reductions in tanks wall thickness and therefore substantial cost reductions. In some sections of tanks, for example, duplex grades enable up to 50 percent material savings, whether this involves the storage of liquids or flour silos.

Thinner wall thickness also brings along other benefits. It reduces the need for welding consumables and can also reduce welding time itself. Less weight in transport means further cost savings, while also reducing emissions.

Why use  duplex stainless steel?

  • It has good to very good resistance to pitting, crevice and uniform corrosion
  • It has high resistance to corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion cracking.
  • It has high mechanical strength with good abrasion and erosion resistance.
  • It has high energy absorption and good fatigue resistance.
  • It has low thermal expansion with good weldability and machinability.

What does this mean to you?

  • You can save costs by ordering thinner material.
  • You will decrease the amount of needed welding consumables.
  • Welding takes less time.
  • Less weight to transport.

If you are not familiar with the Outokumpu Duplex grades, we can help you in several different aspects, such as with the tools for your own calculations on the internet, training in duplex welding, manufacturing instructions, corrosion resistance and even

design alteration.
