Lean duplexes receive national technical approval in Germany

6月 16, 2014

Outokumpu’s lean duplex grades LDX 2101® (EN 1.4162) and LDX 2404® (EN 1.4662) recently received general approval AbZ (Allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Zulassung) by the German national building authority DIBt (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik). The approval makes the use of lean duplex material in building and construction industry easy as no separate approvals are needed anymore for the manufactured components.

Thomas Kirchhartz, Technical Manager from Outokumpu, comments: “Lean duplex grades are known for their excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance as well as for cost competitiveness. Therefore this approval really is a significant milestone for the use of lean duplex grades in building and construction as customers are now able to take full advantage of this great material without the need for extra approvals.”
The AbZ approval covers lean duplex coil and plate products up to and including 30 mm thickness and bar products up to and including 40 mm diameter as well as all components manufactured from these materials.

Approval for the highest level

The AbZ approval is a document which is issued every five years and the latest version was published in May 2014.

Thomas Kirchhartz coordinated the application process for the approval at Outokumpu side. “First step was to define what material and dimensions we are seeking approval for. We wanted to go for the highest level approval - general approval - which covers not only the use of a specific material in certain product form but the use of the material in building and construction in general.”

Outokumpu cooperated closely with a German fabricator Modersohn in the project for approval. Modershohn, German fabricator, produced the test specimens which were used in the analysis phase for acquiring the approval.

Wilhelm Modersohn from Wilhelm Modersohn GmbH & Co. KG says:  “We were pleased to take part in the approval process and produce the test specimens for Outokumpu. We have a long history of working with duplex grades and are well aware of the advantages of this material. The increased strength with leaner alloying elements means a more competitive price with stronger products.”

Having LDX finally listed in standards and included in product specification and tenders, manufacturers of innovative structural solutions for the building and construction industry will be able to gain competitive advantage through these special grades.

Sustainable construction with stainless steel

There is a growing potential for stainless steels in architecture, building and construction applications as sustainability aspects such as longer building lives and the choice of resource-saving construction materials is of growing interest. Therefore stainless steel is a perfect choice due to its long lifetime and low life-cycle costs.

Says Bernd Beckers, Head of Technical Marketing at Outokumpu: “Having our LDX 2101® and LDX 2404® in various product forms now included in the list of approved grades clearly promotes the use of lean duplex in all sorts of building applications and infrastructure projects where customers can benefit from the combination of strength and corrosion resistance.”

Also, an additional advantage with the AbZ approval is the fact that even though it is inherently a German approval, it serves well in other specifically European markets where it is closely followed. Another case is, for example, tank parks that have own standards which they follow, but even they follow closely which materials have received the German AbZ approval.
