A new 6,000-metric ton heavy wall press is now fully operational at the Outokumpu Stainless Pipe facility in Wildwood, Florida (USA).

“The press was installed about 18 months ago, so now our operators are very familiar with the equipment, product running through the press is being delivered on time, and the quality is top-notch,” notes Roger Ricketts, Outokumpu Stainless Pipe Commercial Manager.

“The press was installed about 18 months ago, so now our operators are very familiar with the equipment, product running through the press is being delivered on time, and the quality is top-notch,” assures Ricketts.

In addition to these customer benefits, the new press is also improving mill operations. The older press was labor-intensive, requiring about 8 hours to form a heavy wall pipe from plate. The new press can complete the task in about 30 minutes. “The new press is completely automated, offering a huge leap forward in production, a benefit that is ultimately better for the customer, too,” Ricketts adds.

End-use customers in the oil & gas segment are likely to benefit the most from the new press and the adjacent plasma cutter at the mill. The Wildwood mill receives stainless plate from the Outokumpu Stainless Plate facility in New Castle, Indiana (USA) that serves as the raw material for the heavy wall pipe that is available in 304L, 316L, 347, and a full range of duplex grades.
