Outokumpu is the world-leading supplier of duplex stainless steels for storage tanks, materials proven optimal for tanks where the content quality must remain uncompromised. LDX 2101® from Outokumpu makes duplex tanks increasingly affordable.
Palm oil is said to be nature’s gift to the world. Consumed as food for more than 5,000 years, it is today used in many non-food applications including soaps and oleo chemicals, and it is even finding a new application in biodiesel fuels.
Loders Croklaan of Holland, a key global supplier of oils and fats, runs Europe’s largest palm oil refinery and fractionation plant in the Port of Rotterdam. The facility is the company’s final link in the global palm oil supply chain. It processes up to 3,000 tons of palm oil daily.
In 2004, Siemerink of Holland, a company specializing in stainless steel tank design and construction, completed a breakthrough palm oil tank for Loders Croklaan in Rotterdam: the tank is built out of LDX 2101 duplex stainless steel, a proprietary duplex grade from Outokumpu. The material choice gave the tank owner the guarantee of the high corrosion resistance of all duplex stainless steel grades.
This helps to safeguard the tank content by reducing the risk of cross-contamination. Moreover, as LDX 2101 has 90 percent higher strength than standard austenitic stainless steels, the material enabled Siemerink to achieve a 30 percent weight saving compared to a conventional stainless steel tank.
Another benefit to Loders Croklaan came from extra-wide material: Outokumpu provides duplex stainless steel in 2-meter-wide coils and tailor-made plates up to 3.2 meters wide. The large widths translate into cost savings due to fewer rings and less welding.
LDX 2101, a low-alloyed duplex grade, is ideal for moderate corrosion conditions such as storing palm oil and other edible oils. Thanks to its low nickel content, LDX 2101 can well compete in price with carbon steel tanks when the life cycle cost is taken into account.
What palm oil is said to be to the world, LDX 2101 is to storing it.
