Studentships are normally for PhD or research Masters courses. Conditions of support are flexible, but are related to those of existing state studentships, for example the EPSRC CASE award scheme in the UK. Applications from students are received and processed normally by the university department in question and applicants must be able to meet the residence and entrance requirements of the university. Projects are also performed at research institutes having specialist expertise within priority areas.

The research projects are carried out in cooperation, as appropriate, with the technical resources of Outokumpu companies in Finland, Sweden and the UK. This enables students to gain familiarity with industrial technology and R&D practices. However, there is no commitment to employment on either side.
