Outokumpu extends advice available on the use of stainless rebar

The growing use of stainless steel reinforcing bar around the world has focused mainly on the excellent corrosion properties of the product. Not surprisingly
The assistance provided by Outokumpu’s extensive R&D programme and commissioned reports from experts has been on understanding the ingress of chlorides to the reinforcement and the resistance the stainless reinforcement to chlorides. >See publications.

With stainless steel structural sections advanced design methods have been included in guidance and codes of practice. However the external advice on the design engineering of stainless rebar in reinforced concrete structures has not gone to this extent to date.

In order to improve the design understanding in this field we have commissioned the VTT in Finland to make some recommendations for testing and design. The VTT went further and have also provided a report on designing with stainless rebar applying EC2 showing e.g. were the additional strength of stainless rebar can add economic advantages. We are now pleased to publish these reports available for download below.

> Stainless Steel Rebars: Recommendations for Testing and Design
> Design with stainless steel rebars applying Eurocode 2

Among the national road authorities this design principle has been incorporated also into the Finnish Roads Administration who has carried out research to give additional advice on the use of stainless rebar in bridges. Their report is available on this link.
