Stainless steels for energy production from waste and biomass

The new issue of ACOM is a special edition on the performance of stainless steels in environments related to energy production. Combustion of waste and biomass is making an increasing contribution to greener energy production. However, the corrosive conditions limit plant efficiency and component lifetimes. By replacing low-alloyed material with different stainless steels, maintenance and energy costs can be reduced.

This large special edition of Acom includes three articles, which focus on the high temperature corrosion on different stainless steels in comparison to carbon steels and low-alloyed ferritic steels in simulated high temperature environments.

The first article studies the material behaviour in an environment with regularly renewing of KCl-ZnCl2 deposits. The second article is about the performance of different materials under KCl-K2SO4 deposits at two different temperatures, 550°C and 700°C. The third article has some common points with the two first articles but also presents field testing data and corrosion-resistant grades for flue gas cleaning applications.

The conclusions drawn from the results in these three articles, is that the simulated testing showed reasonable accordance with field testing and that stainless steel make an attractive choice of material, either to give an extension of component lifetimes or to allow an increase in process temperatures, and thus increasing the plant energy efficiency.
