Steel Bar

Our stainless steel quality begins with state-of-the-art melt shops that ensure superior control of product composition, structure, and inclusion pattern resulting in very clean steel.

Computerized process control of our rolling mills, heat treatment facilities, and finishing lines ensures consistency and superior control of the targeted properties.

Product applications
Our bar and long products are selected by a multitude of industries, including:

  • Chemical and petrochemical processing
  • Pulp and paper
  • Food and beverage processing
  • Machining of valves, fittings, and other components

A range of standard & special grades

We have a tradition of leadership in the introduction of specialised grades of stainless steel. To effectively and economically meet the diverse needs of the industries we serve, we have created facilities that are exceptionally qualified, in both equipment and experience, to produce bar and long products in a full range of heat and corrosion resisting stainless steels and in a wide range of grades including:
  • 303 HST, optimized machining performance for high volume screw machine products
  • PRODEC® 303, 304, 304L, 316 and 316L, for superior machinability
  • 254 SMO®, used for over 20 years to provide longer material life in most corrosive environments
  • 2205 Code Plus Two®, one of our duplex stainless steels for corrosion resistance, toughness, weldability, and high strength
  • 253 MA®, a micro-alloyed grade for high temperature ranges
  • LDX 2101®, a cost effective, quality duplex grade

Superior Performance with Duplex
We are one of the world’s largest producers of duplex stainless steels. Our duplex stainless steels combine the best properties of austenitic and ferritic grades, resulting in a product that - when compared to standard austenitic grades - offers almost twice the strength level; equal or superior, pitting and crevice resistance; and greatly enhanced resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking. We pioneered the development of duplex stainless steel with 2205 Code Plus Two®.

PRODEC® for enhanced machinability
Produced exclusively by Outokumpu for over two decades, PRODEC® (which stands for PRODuction EConomy) is a premium quality stainless steel designed for enhanced machinability and processed to provide uniform consistency of properties from bar to bar and heat to heat. Our PRODEC® bar shows the same yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, hardness, and toughness as conventionally produced bar. Yet, its corrosion resistance is equal or superior to that of stainless steel of the same grade.

PRODEC® quality is available in 303, 304, 304L, 316, and 316L round and hexagonal bar, and meets all requirements of ASTM, ASME, and other specifications.

The uniformity of PRODEC® bar permits aggressive machining in short product runs in job shops, as well as reliable performance in long product runs in automated machining operations. PRODEC® machinable stainless steel represents an opportunity for savings in the total cost of machined parts.

Quality assurance
Our manufacturing programme is supported by an in-house product inspection and testing programme in addition to a technical team with extensive experience.

Our bar production is accredited to recognised international standards, including: Quality management: ISO 9001

Bar stock
Outokumpu hold a bar stock range which is available in Europe. Please see Technical Information pages for more information. Grades and sizes are available on request.

All products are available in imperial sizes, subject to enquiry. From our Bar Finishing operation we can also cut bars to length and pack according to customer requirements. Please contact your local Outokumpu sales representative for further information.

Enhancing Performance
Outokumpu has invested in establishing a bar finishing operation in Sheffield, UK. Schumag Bright Bar drawing machines allow production of 5mm to 25mm cold drawn bar. Equipment incorporating some of the best available technology has been installed to ensure that products of the highest quality can be offered to suit the widest variety of demanding applications. The manufacturing programme consists of round, hexagon and square drawn bar across the full size and grade range. Bar can also be centreless ground for special applications where a high quality surface finish and tight tolerance is required.
