Plate order for desalination plant marks breakthrough for new stainless steel

First time the LDX2101® grade will be used for large desalination plants.

Outokumpu Stainless Hot Rolled Plate (HRP) in Degerfors has received a major order for stainless steel plate for two plants for the desalination of seawater that are to be built in the Middle East. One of these plants will be built in Dubai, the other will be built in Abu Dhabi.

The order is for 1,750 tons of Outokumpu Stainless’ new stainless steel grade, LDX2101®. LDX2101® is a high-strength structural stainless steel with very good corrosion resistance properties. The grade is regarded as a versatile, moderately priced steel and it has been developed to offer a competitive stainless alternative to materials such as painted or color coated carbon steel. Stainless steel has the advantage of combining excellent durability with minimum maintenance requirements during its service life.

This is the first time that the LDX2101® grade will be used for large desalination plants. ”To secure freshwater supplies, major investments are currently being made in plants for seawater desalination,” explains Hachemi Loucif, manager for the Hot Rolled Plate business unit’s Desalination segment.

”Outokumpu Stainless has devoted considerable resources in the form of technical presentations, tests with designers and design engineers in the desalination segment in order to demonstrate the advantages of LDX2101®. As a result, the grade has been added to the list of materials for the desalination process Multi Stage Flash (MSF),” continues Hachemi Loucif.

Outokumpu Stainless Hot Rolled Plate has also received an order for 800 tons of stainless steel plate from a tube manufacturer in Germany. The plates will be used in the manufacture of seamless tubes and will be delivered to the Norwegian oil and gas industry.

The material will be delivered to Conoco Phillips in Norway, who will be responsible for the construction of the Bypass project at the Ekofisk platform in the North Sea.

”Some sections of the Ekofisk area are now approaching the end of their planned operating time, but by reinforcing parts of certain process stages, it is possible to extend this operating time,” says Jan Eriksson, General Manager Marketing & Sales for Outokumpu Stainless HRP.

”Many of the planned investments in the oil and gas sector have in recent times been postponed, but in view of the current high oil prices, many of these investments and expansion projects will probably go ahead, and this could boost the demand for stainless steel,” says Jan Eriksson.

The combined value of these orders is around SEK 75 million.
